Understanding the term ‘Spirituality’ and ‘Soul’ from the Sanskrit language
In today’s article on the Basics of Spirituality from Ancient India, we will explore the meaning of the word — Spirituality.
‘Spirituality’ in Sanskrit is called ADHYATMA; pronounced as
AADH — YA — ATAM.
If we dissect the word, Adhyatma, we get —
ADHYATMA = ADHI (1) + ATMA (2)
(1) ADHI means Knowledge
(2) and Atma means Soul [ as explained further below ]
Therefore, SPIRITUALITY or ADHYATMA means ‘The Knowledge of the Soul’.
OR
we can also infer from the above that the study of Spirituality is all about ‘the Study of the Soul’.
Let us understand the term ‘Adhyatma’ with an example -
(1) I am very good at Adhyatma
Meaning: I am very good at Spirituality (as a Subject).
(2) ADHYATMA is an extremely important subject for a human being’s evolution.
Meaning: SPIRITUALITY is an extremely important subject for a human being’s evolution.
