The True Meaning of “Namaste” — And Why It’s So Much More Than a Yoga-Class Goodbye
Many practitioners in the USA and Canada greet Namaste at the end of a yoga class, in meditation circles, or as a peaceful way of saying goodbye.
But in India, where the word originates, Namaste isn’t just a friendly sign-off…
Where “Namaste” Comes From
The word comes from Sanskrit:
- Namaḥ — reverence, bow
- Te — to you
Together, Namaste translates to “I bow to you.”
In India, Namaste is never only spoken. It’s expressed through the añjali mudra — palms pressed together accompanied by a gentle bow of the head.
Each element carries spiritual meaning:
• Hands pressed together
A symbol of unity: right and left brain, masculine and feminine, the human and the divine.
